Welcome to Galveston’s First African American Museum

Galveston’s First African American museum was established in 1999 by James E. Josey, Sr. The museum was founded with the goal of preserving and showcasing the rich history and heritage of African Americans in Galveston, Texas.

The purpose of the Museum is to preserve the history and the legacy of local Galveston African American Historian so, that young people would see that there are positive role models in their community that they can pattern off of instead of the negativity that plagues our community.

The mission of Galveston’s First African American Museum is to educate and teach young people to put God first, respect themselves and others, do the right thing in life and know the importance of their history and to be proud of it. The museum’s founder, James Josey, Sr., believes that

“if you’re not proud of your history, heritage and culture then it is easy to become misled into a destructive life.”

Over the years, the museum has grown in popularity and importance, serving as a cultural hub for both locals and tourists interested in learning about the African American experience in Galveston. Through its exhibits, programs, and events, the museum continues to celebrate and honor the legacy of local African Americans from their own community.
